CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers were surprised to be able to sign running back Rico Dowdle, a move that gave them added depth and experience in the backfield. Coach Dave Canales has expressed excitement about the move, noting Dowdle’s experience and potential as a 1,000-yard rusher. Dowdle, who wasn’t re-signed by the Dallas Cowboys, agreed to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with performance incentives. He sees Carolina as a good fit because of its strong offensive line and proximity to his hometown. GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Young is finally a PGA Tour winner and there was no stopping him in at the Wyndham Championship. Young took any drama out of the final round when he made five straight birdies led by nine shots. He coasted home from there and shot 68 to win by six. The victory follows seven runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour. He becomes the 1,000th player to win a PGA Tour-recognized event. SINGAPORE (AP) — The United States, which had a frustrating swim world championships, ended on a high note Sunday with a world record in the women’s 4×100 medley in the last event of the eight-day championships. The Americans swam a record time of 3 minutes, 49.34 seconds. The Americans had the old record of 3:49.63. BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds are playing the first MLB regular season game ever in the state of Tennessee after a rain delay before the first pitch. They are wrapping up a three-game series Saturday night at the MLB Speedway Classic on the diamond constructed on the infield at Bristol Motor Speedway. This racetrack is called “The Last Great Colosseum.” Organizers threw a big party mixing NASCAR themes with baseball with star Tim McGraw performing. GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Young is one round away from finally being a PGA Tour winner. He ran off four straight birdies in the Wyndham Championship and stretched his lead to eight shots at one point. Young made a pair of late birdies for a 65. That gives him a five-shot lead over Nico Echavarria. No one else is closer than eight shots. Young is widely considered the best player without a victory on a main tour. The Wyndham Championship closes out the PGA Tour’s regular season. It’s the last chance for players to get into the top 70 in the FedEx Cup and advance to the postseason. And it’s a reminder that golf doesn’t offer guarantees. Max Homa, Sahith Theegala and Adam Scott played in the Presidents Cup. All three are among those outside the top 70 going into the Wyndham Championship. LIV Golf is going to South Africa next year. Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase placed on paid leave as part of MLB sports betting investigation

Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of a Major League Baseball investigation into sports betting. Clase, a three-time All-Star, becomes the second Guardians pitcher to be placed on leave in connection with a sports gambling probe. Luis Ortiz also is on non-disciplinary leave through Aug. 31. It was unclear if the cases were related in any way.
